I received an ARC of this book with thanks to HarperCollins via NetGalley.

A narrative about deep illicit love and their lives either side of their relationship with their respective spouses, My Coney Island Baby is a emotively written story about Michael and Cailtin and their profound love for one another in deceitful circumstances. O'Callaghan is a magical writer. He writes with such poetic lyricism and a deep sense of compassion and yearning, that it's hard to feel any sense of contempt for his characters who have shared an adulterous relationship for the past twenty five years. You understand through his use of prose how deeply in love these two people are even though married to others, and it's difficult to condone their relationship when O'Callaghan hands you beautiful tools to see them through such empathetic eyes. He presents you with an awareness and perspective that perhaps you'd have neglected to consider up until now.

As beautifully written as it was, unfortunately I also found my attention span dwindled throughout the book as the pace was leisurely and sometimes slightly dull. It didn't take away from the breathtaking scope of the story, but it made reading more effort than I would care to admit.

Wonderful! There's so much in this story... Basically, it's about love which may or may not beat hipocracy, cowardice, and self-deceit. Heavily loaded with melancholy, so I suppose one should be in a proper mood for this one. The atmosphere is dense and the writing simply gorgeous.

It's really hard-going, and while the prose is excellent n places, it's also repetitive, feeling padded rather than giving added depth to the narrative.

Michael and Caitlin are a couple at Coney Island on a cold, snowy day. They are comfortable and affectionate yet we can sense there is a spectre between them. To escape the cold they enter a hotel room; “the room is clean and plain but determinedly sterile, with all trace of romance having been surgically removed, the sort of room suited to women on the run, and traveling salesmen, and those who wish to hide for a while without being found...The room, he decides will be sufficient for their needs, but only because they have carried life in here with them...”✨

As Caitlin and Michael ruminate about their respective lives, we learn the forces that may separate them are a job transfer and a terminal illness. Written in beautiful prose, this is one day in the life of these two people who share a non-traditional love. ✨

This is not my favorite type of story, still I found myself wanting something good for these two but not quite certain what to wish for. As illustrated above, I thought the writing was so wonderfully descriptive and lyrical. Thanks to Harper Collins for this advance readers copy.
