I want to spit and scream at how this book has torn me apart & put me back together. I really hope one day I can be happy like completely. This is gut wrenching.

I read this novel in verse one sitting. It took me back to a relationship I had years ago: It was passionate and all consuming, so it was hard to realize how much it was burning both of us until we were standing on the ashes of the relationship.
Woodfolk does a phenomenal job in bringing these big feelings to life and the book’s Author’s Note is perhaps my second favorite ever.

A very tender and raw read. I can’t think of another poetry book that has a plot. It was neat to go through. The commentary on love and loving someone was really well done

if you’re looking for a book that explores the relationship of a black, queer couple, this is for you.
this book is so raw and beautiful in its portrayal of the two main characters. it feels like a real relationship that teenagers would be in, with all its toxic and soft moments.

A fiercely beautiful story of first love and heartbreak.
One might question why I call this story beautiful, when right from the start you know its going to end in heart break. It really puts into focus what relationships we categorise as beautiful, because even the fleeting moments of love seem like eternity to lovers, they hold unto it and the memory of it for as long as they live. The little moments, actions and emotions last a lot longer in our memories than we can pretend.
In this book we follow two teenage girls as they fall in love, accept their love, explore their love, engulf themselves in it, use it to hide from the world but as we all know the world always knock on our safety and cocoon. With their race a clutch and an invite for adultification, their sexuality a thing of grief (bi-erasure), the complexities of their friendship, parental and societal expectations crushing down on them, a fire is set. We had to watch them (like on a stage) at a bridge as they both rip each other apart.
I really loved this book. The author has such a beautiful way with words. Not only does she craft words like armour, her words feel both like a fortress and a siege (protect and imprison you).
Thanks to Pride Book Tours for making this book available to me as part of the IG tour.
