I don’t even know where to begin with this review. This. Book. Is. Everything. The POV shapes the raw, profound honesty of the narrator. As she relays the major beats of the story, she provides insight into the complex nature of a deep, deep friendship and a first love – one that’s tumultuous and all-consuming. Honestly, I did struggle while reading. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had been written in regular prose, the book in verse aesthetic made me struggle to follow what was going on and where in time I was at any given moment. However, I also appreciate that the disjointed writing style that came from this added to the overall feel of the book, adding extra layers of… Not quite confusion but that sense of being lost in someone else. Time and place no longer matter, only they do. I appreciated the author’s realism in approaching this borderline toxic relationship between these two girls.

This book is very intense. I thought it would be a quick read to boost my page count a bit, but I regret reading it so fast. I wish I’d taken my time, because being caught in this whirlwind was emotionally heavy. But it was compelling! There’s something so intoxicating to me about friends getting into (and out of) relationships because there’s just so much history! And this book does a good job handling that. The characters were very teenagery without the writing seeming super teenagery.
