"I still recall a line from that feckless Everyman's Guide. It said something like, "the Tower's real trade is in whimsy, adventure, and romance." I cannot imagine a less accurate trio. Though, who in their right minds would've come if the editors had said, "the Tower's true trade is in tyranny, dismemberment, and heartbreak"?"
A pretty solid story with a simple yet unique plot.
If your childhood was anything like mine, you grew up going to Sunday school. The Tower of Babel that we learned about there was wildly different from what we get in this story.
I think my favorite part about the story is the overall averageness of the characters. I think most seasoned readers would expect a completely different character to embark on the quest Senlin undertakes. Yet he is all we've got. An awkward academic with low self-esteem and plenty of naiveté.
The side characters in this story really shine, and I appreciated the author's efforts to flesh them out as much as possible in such a limited amount of pages. I am very curious to see where this story leads.

DNF. The audiobook was well read, but I just didn’t enjoy the overly quirky story of bumbling adventures. It just seems like it’s never going to end and I’m ready to move on with 3.5h remaining.
Methinks I've found a new favourite writer here. I wanted to sit on this for a bit, but I really really loved this little book. Such a refreshingly unique read with some truly wonderful prose. I think Bancroft is one of the best writers of prose I've discovered in fantasy. He has a way of introducing characters with a screenplay-like efficiency and also has a poetry to it making it both beautiful and practical.
"She spoke with the urgency of a burst pipe"
What a marvelous way to immediately paint a picture of a character
