Wow, what an amazing book... I had heard interesting things about this book and that intrigued me enough to buy it (or rather have Santa (also me) buy it for me). I had no idea what to expect and t still manage to surprise me!

"Whatever Marya's state, whatever mine, I will find her, and I will carry her home."

The writing, for me as a non native English speaker/reader, was a little difficult to get into. I had to reread several lines every now and then to really understand what they were trying to say. This was actually not a bad thing! It kept me on my toes and really made me think about what was actually written what made the story even more "real" to me... Although "real" may not be the right word...
What a powerful imagination Josiah Bancroft must have to come up with this fantastic tale. I just don't know how to describe it. I can't do better than to say that to me it felt like an Alice in Wonderland for adults (Tim Burton-style). Bizarre, unique, strange, different, unpreditable and captivating. I simply could not put it down!

"Even beauty diminishes with study. It is better to glance than gawk."

Love the book, love the world, the characters, the unknown, the way it’s real and unreal, the way it comes together. The writing style is very literary. Love the mini quote from books at the start of each chapter.

Somehow it’s not a 5, maybe because I could put it down? Or maybe because I got confused sometimes when it changed from first to third person, even though it’s always from Senlin’s perspective.
