An excellent romp up the increasingly dark and forbidding Tower of Babel, as the entertainingly rigid Senlin pursues his lost wife. I came for the adventure and stayed for the protagonist, really great stuff.

I wish I loved this more than I did. Finally got hooked at 80% but at this stage I don’t see myself continuing the series

This book was recommended to me, and I knew nothing about it at the time, just that someone else enjoyed it and I should read it.
For about the first hundred pages I took in the world (I enjoyed it), the details (thorough but not overly laborious), the characters (an interesting sort!), and thought ... it was fine. This is fine.
I thought I knew where the book was going, the intended style or result of the plot, and I said to myself "yea this is cool but not great. I'll finish this then move onto something else."
I was very, very (pleasantly) wrong.
To avoid specifics but paint the cognitive roller coaster my brain went through, the plot developed into something more enjoyable for me than what I was originally expecting and the subterfuge (likely not intended by the author and just me playing myself) played to my advantage at the book concluded.
Became a page turner as it went on and a fun novel all around.

A surprising idea for a steampunk novel. Hard to visualize at times, but very imaginative.
If Dante’s Inferno met The Hobbit met The Hitchhikers Guide sprinkled with a tiny bit of Austen. I went in with high expectations and wasn’t disappointed.
3.5
I liked how fast paced the book was, but Senlin was kind of frustrating with how clueless he was. I get it, he's like a fish out of water and his expectations of Babel were destroyed, but at some point it's like, PLEASE, you must know that its a fucked up dystopia. Stop being kn denial. Idk if I'll finish the series
