Bilbo Baggins wanders into a Terry Gilliam film. Very dense, detailed novel that I really enjoyed. Some very unique ideas and settings, believable characters, a man striving despite the callous evil around him
Oh. My. God.
What a ride!!! The first half was fairly enjoyable, but the rest kept me flipping pages until I got to the end.
This world, this work- it’s terrifying and adventurous, horrible and entrancing.
It’s as if someone ripped open humanity, exposed all its bloody horrors and then patched it back up and painted it a joyful color. But one keeps hoping that there is something good underneath. And there may be, we just haven’t gotten there yet.

A book I would never have bought for myself, but was gifted by a friend, and I'm so glad I found it. It captured me on the first page, although I didn't feel compelled to burn through it as I have with other books. I enjoyed it slowly, savoured the world Bancroft built, and was rewarded for it. I think this book will stay with me for a while. At least until the second one arrived.
Also a side note my paperback copy is the silkiest book ever the spine is so flexible like AHH! A treat.

Picked up to read in between other books, now they’ll wait.
I picked this up in between reading other books, now they’ll wait as I voraciously finish the series. Bancroft is a storyteller. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, plot, and world in no small part due to his wonderful prose. It was truly art. This book sucks you in and doesn’t let go (just like the Tower of Babel). Can’t wait to see how this story unfolds, I know for certain it will be wonderful and if it isn’t, it won’t be because it’s not well written and so even then it will be great. Do yourself a favor and read this.
