The Naturalist

It’s a page-tapper. Good thing it was on my Kindle. I wouldn’t have the patience to turn actual pages in my rush to read the conclusion.

Some slight moments of consciousness as I experienced incredulity over some of the professor’s methods, but the action quickly caught me up again.

Far fetched? Probably. Did I finish it in half a day? Definitely. Overall really enjoyed this book and excited to read more from the series.

I liked the very nerdy protagonist and the way he used his knowledge to solve the crime. While he was a little too good to be true, I think the writer has improved from the Angel Killer book, and I'd read more in this series.

The Naturalist is just the perfect and irresistibly weekend story for those who love a perfect crime being untangled by the impossibility of CSI but to another level - Inkish Kingdoms.

I’m not one to read a lot of murder mystery books, but if had to pick only a few to re-read for the rest of my life, I think this would be one of them.

I loved Theo’s character and his unique scientific approach — I don’t think there’s another book in this genre that has a man who studies how species adapt and change that tries to pin down a murderer. Highly recommended, especially for people like me who don’t read much of this genre.

Wow!
First - don’t read this book if you are easily upset by scary serial killers or blood
Second - I was fascinated by Theo - he pissed me off sometimes and acted downright dumb but he’s just a man right? He was doing the best he could

This book had me turning pages as fast as I could read them for the last 20-25%

Creepy? Yes
A bit scary? Yes, at times
Did I like it? YES

Snagged this in the Kindle daily deals section and it was worth the $1.99 I paid.
The narrator was a little insufferable. He didn't feel like a real person to me, but I did enjoy the random bits of scientific information. A fairly quick read. I could have done without the narrator's weird perma-horniness, though.

Mildly entertaining. Filled with tired tropes and cliches and stereotypes. But fast paced! The book equivalent of watching a CSI episode. It's not bad or boring enough to turn off but you are certainly not going to rave about it to anyone. The ending was particularly ridiculous.

For a mystery book, the writing in here is SUPER witty and sharp. I'm used to seeing mystery books being a little more noire feeling and detail oriented, so it was a nice change of pace having a character pile Theo who made me laugh so much.

On the downside, they took Theo's crazy a few bricks too far (in my opinion). The guy talks to himself, risks his teaching job, and risks being arrested for a girl he supposedly hadn't seen in years.

Did I miss something here?

He's tripping a little too hard for a chick he only taught or he's lying about their relationship.

You know that guy who interjects himself into a conversation with a, “well actually…?” The type with no discernible likable qualities. He’s socially awkward, boasts about his intelligence, and discusses scientific facts to other characters with a sense of superiority. Do you want to read a book about that guy solving a murder and chasing a serial killer? If you said yes, this is for you.

Sure the author tries to make Theo human. He makes him frightened of confrontation, unaware how to act around women, and weaker around stronger men. That’s all well and good if he wasn’t just so unlikable.

Secondary characters have no depth and come and go like the wind. Even the killer is some flat stereotype, whose motivations are barely addressed, if at all.

There was potential too. I actually was getting into the 1st half of the book. But somewhere it just fell flat, like the author wasn’t sure where to go or was in a hurry to wrap it up.

On the bright side I borrowed this from Amazon Prime. Worth a read if it’s free and you have a couple of evenings to read. It’s a fast one to get through for sure.
