3.8 AVERAGE

This book had the scientific depth of Michael Crichton and the headlong, nonsensical plotting of Dan Brown. A good diversion if you’re drinking cocktails on a beach & maintaining a safe distance from others.

An awesome mystery/thriller with a smart narrator who would probably be played by Adam Driver. This should definitely be a movie. I read it in a day- nothing incredibly complex here. It was solid mystery that kept me intrigued.

great serial killer hunting story. the “intellectual” scientific bit were informative without being pretentious. very palatable for ur average reader like myself. satisfying ending. i don’t have a specific reason for the star deduction, i’m just picky with giving out 5 star reviews. overall a great book!

Not your average murder

Definitely a roller coaster from the beginning. Theo's inner monologue is charming, albeit long winded at times. The cliff hangers between chapters and clarity moments the protagonist has keep the reader engaged, although there are some things I am skeptical on (or maybe I'm just not a scientist). I've read a lot of crime/murder mysteries, but this one is definitely unique.

Wow. Intriguing characters and concepts, hilariously brilliant-but-naïve protagonist, and an ending that...well, no matter what you're expecting, you can't expect what really happens. Minor suspension of disbelief required if you have real experience with any sort of data analytics or computational science - but a hell of a fun read nonetheless. I'm looking forward to the sequels.

I WAS ACTUALLY SURPRISED BY THIS BOOK. AT FIRST I DIDN'T REALLY CARE FOR THE STORY LINE. BUT THE MORE I READ IT THE MORE INVESTED AND CURIOUS I GOT. I REALLY LIKED THAT THE CHAPTERS WERE SHORT AND THE WRITING FLOWED PERFECTLY. IT ENDED ON A CLIFFHANGER WHICH I ENJOYED. I HAD SOME UNANSWERED QUESTIONS WITH THE BOOK, SO GETTING TO READ ANOTHER IS GREAT.

DR THEO CRAY IS A BIOLOGIST/PROFESSOR BUT HIS SPECIALTY IS WITH SEEING PATTERNS, DIGITAL CODES AND MICROBES. AFTER ONE OF HIS FORMER STUDENTS IS FOUND DEAD, SPECULATION IS THAT IT WAS A BEAR. BUT THEO BELIEVES OTHERWISE. HE STARTS TO TRY AND FIND EVIDENCE THAT IT WAS MURDER AND WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.
WHAT HE STUMBLES UPON WHILE DOING RESEARCH LEADS HIM TO BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIAL KILLER AND HE'S DETERMINED TO FIND OUT WHO THAT IS

This book is amazing. Nerd stuff, crime stuff, awkward social stuff, small town stuff, overly-focused personality stuff, bad decision stuff, social science stuff, and not a trope or a obvious twist in sight. Really worth a read.

Theo Cray is a biologist who studies wood frog tadpoles, but he also knows how to find a dead body that the police detectives haven't been able to find, based solely on the pattern of plant life growing in an area (he's apparently also a botanist). He gets severely beaten - twice, looses most of his blood, and still has time to write script for a bot that searches the web for any articles mentioning a certain phrase and will text him when it finds them (he's apparently also a computer programmer). All of this because of a former student he didn't even remember at first. What now??

Two stars because I finished it.

I didn’t like the very beginning because of (warning!) animal deaths. But somehow I ended up becoming obsessed with finishing the story.
