I will never get tired of stories about non-traditional love. Unique, yet completely relatable.
I thought that the subject matter and time period the novel was set in were unique and interesting (the AIDS crisis of the 80s), but I just couldn't get into the story. The pacing was slow, and the characters didn't appeal to me as they felt forced and unrealistic. I finally sped-read through the last 100 or so pages as it wasn't grabbing me. I, too, was duped by so many of the glowing reviews (which seems to be the case for many readers here). If you do decide to read it, get it from your library so you don't spend any money.
Fantastic novel. A coming of age tale that weaves in elements of complicated types of love, the special bond between siblings, and the explosion of AIDS in New York during the 1980s .

This book almost bested The Good Thief and that is saying a lot. Honestly, just the best book I have read in a very long time. How do authors do this on their first book out of the gate? I LOVED IT.
Told from the point of view of a 14 year old girl who is very smart and quirky, this story drew me in from the very beginning. It might be called a " coming of age" story, however, I felt like it was more about family relationships, and how those relationships form how we view and interact with the world. As often happens when a story develops characters so fully, I didn't want the story to end because I wanted to keep knowing what is going on in their life. Great read.
At 45% the story had not moved forward in several hours of reading. The way the teenager girl narrator spoke was not realistic
