This was inoffensive really, but I found myself bored out of my gourd, wishing for better storytelling on every single page. It had no panache, no style, no sense of mystery or true foreboding. It was just meh. Average in every way. I will probably read the second book to see if the author can spin her uninteresting start into something better, but as it is this is a Hunger Games clone by an author who seems to have half the talent. I hope I am wrong, otherwise, I just wasted an entire day on drivel.
With all that said, if you love YA dystopia, you will probably rate this slightly higher than I did. It is truly inoffensive with a couple of scenes of decent action.

It was strange. I was so uneasy ever since Mare started to act as a Silver. There was this feeling of dread that everything was wrong. And in the end it was.
I always knew Maven was bad news but I thought he'd become evil because Mare will eventually choose Cal. This is just... Shit.
And I kinda hate the circumstances. I hate the betrayals. I didn't like Cal enough to feel sad for him. I didn't like Maven enough to hate him. I hated Mare too much for playing with the boys (Cal, Maven, Kilorn) to pity her. Is it that common to feel something towards multiple boys at once and hurt everyone in the end? I'm seeing this in lots of books and it sucks. It makes the female lead's character weak.
In the end all I felt was a sense of unease. Like I would've been better off without knowing this story.
I thought she'd become the queen by the end of the book but thank God she didn't. That would've been disastrous.
In the end all I felt was a sense of unease. Like I would've been better off without knowing this story.

I was able to guess every plot twist before it happened and the book has an open ending. However, I read it with my friend who didn’t see the plot twists so do with that what you will. Other than that I was hooked and just couldn’t put it down until I finished.
