Listening to the audiobook for the first time made the experience feel new again. I always feel like Hogwarts is welcoming me home each time I read it. I do have questions about certain plot points - (why, when the school had enough money to get Harry a broomstick for his first year to join the quidditch team, did no one spring to get Ron a new wand?) but I’ll always love these books nonetheless.

Tui không hiểu tại sao bộ sách này lại phổ biến như vậy. Khi tôi đang đọc, tôi không có cảm giác bị thu hút vào câu chuyện của Harry Potter và bộn bạn nó. Tuy tui có nhiều nguyên nhân tại sao, tui sẽ lưu ý những điều quan trọng nhất:
1. Các nhân vật phụ (ví dụ, hai bạn thân nhất của Harry, Ron Weasley và Hermione Granger) y như không có động cơ riêng tư của họ, và luôn luôn chỉ phản ứng với những điều Harry đang làm. Tôi biết là nhân vật phụ nên, giống tên đã ghi, “phụ” cho nhân vật chính trong sách, nhưng họ vẫn cần phải có động cơ riêng mình. Bởi vì họ không, tui rất chán khi phải đọc và không có sự đầu tư vào họ.
2. Nếu các nhân vật phụ may mắn có động cơ riêng tư, thi cũng không phải là động cơ thú vị nào. Tui lấy ông Malfoy và con trai ổng làm gương. Động cơ của họ là họ không thích dân Muggle, nhưng tại sao? Nếu họ không thích chỉ vì lý do “muggle không tốt, phù thuỷ mới tốt” thì tui thật tình xin lỗi, nhưng quá đơn giản và điều y như vậy đã được thực hiện quá nhiều lần rồi trong văn học. Tui hiểu là sách này dành cho thanh thiếu niên, nhưng đó không phải là nguyên do để làm một câu chuyện quá đơn giản và không có ý tưởng mới mẻ nào.
Nói cho cùng, tui không tích, nhưng tui vẫn sẽ đọc tiếp tại vì tui đã lở mua hết bộ Harry Potter rồi.

Another 4 stars, though that's heavily influenced by knowing the series and how good it does get- while this book is a definite improvement over Sorcerer's Stone, it's also my second-least-favorite of the series.
SO! Harry, Ron & Hermione are back at school and back to solving terrible mysteries! The main plot, however, pales in comparison to the care Rowling takes to build her world and her characters. Not only are the characters we already know given more depth, but we are introduced to new characters with love and attention to detail- it's easy to quickly like Hannah Abbot, for instance, and find Justin Finch-Fletchley likeable and charming- while finding Lucius Malfoy detestable happens immediately.
A flaw I've noticed in this re-read is thatthe characters we are meant to most dislike are all described as large bodies. This is particularly the case for those who are described as cruel AND stupid (Dudley and Vernon Dursley, Crabbe, Goyle, Millicent). The Malfoys have a different set of physical characteristics, but are also described as cruel/evil but also more on the "rich, snobby, cunning" side of things. It's a shame Rowling plays into the stereotype of fat people being also stupid, and uses this physical characteristic to also define many of her unlikable characters. It's something I'll be watching for through this re-read, and seeing if it changes (for the better or worse).
