This is a book that I picked up knowing very little about; I knew that this was a prequel to THUG and centred on Maverick but I didn't know any of the plot points it would centre around.
This book delivered so many damn gut punches and likely would have been even more if I remembered more of THUG. It also likely had a lot of callbacks.
Whilst I don't think I got the fullest experience because THUG was not fresh in my mind, this is a book that could work as a standalone novel and I really, really enjoyed it. It is a book that could easily be finished in a single sitting despite being 300+ pages long.
