I really enjoyed this book. It explores how sexuality and sexual attitudes relate to the cultural and economic aspects of a futuristic society. Humanity in the novel Triton exists in a place where economic mobility is non-restrictive, and sexual attitudes, preferences and sexes themselves are all accommodated and all assimilated and all therefore used to uphold the state and status quo. In doing so it argues that attempting to be something specific and unique is pointless because it only reinforces the restrictive categories humanity has built into society. In 2022, where the LGBT rights movement has transitioned away from it’s roots as an anti-state pro-autonomy cause towards a movement pushing for (self)identification and assimilation, this was a refreshing and timeless read.
