I really loved this book. It was a nice calm read, but still a little exciting! I loved Annie's bravery throughout the story. It was a change of pace from the books I usually read. I thought it was interesting how it was written from the southern point of view, usually (at least the books I've read) the story is told from the point of view of a Northerner (Union). This book was rich with historical facts and stories. I think it was very well written and wasn't too dry.

Meh. Clunky, racially problematic, and rather dull.

This is my first Civil War novel that I remember reading, so my judgement needs to be taken with a grain of salt, since I don't read the material a lot. Three stars for me is a decent rating. Its an okay book, I can see why people would love it I just don't fully feel that way. And to be honest, up to the ending I was ready to give this book 4/5 stars. However, the ending picked up too quick of a pace. And although I loved the foreshadowing with The Scarlet Letter, I feel as though Annie deserved more. A different ending to her story. In addition this book had a lot of forbidden romance promised, but to stay non-spoiler, that promise is not really kept. In fact I could argue that Annie was in love with someone else for half the book.
Stuart duh...
Annie was a good main character though. And for the most part wasn't too much of a Mary Sue. (Also Laurence <3)

Overall, it often felt like this novel oversimplified a complex issue in an attempt to make it more digestible to young readers, and failed to bring any real depth to what was, plot wise, a compelling story. Although I wasn't overly impressed by this novel, it was an easy and quick read and would probably be a good introduction to a younger reader just starting on longer novels with an interest in the Civil War.
