So holy crap plot twist!! um I need the next book asap. And well here's my confession, I am a MAJOR Zayla shipper (I mean like I ship it so hard I'll be reading that impala makeout part over and over) but I'll honestly understand if Rayla is endgame. I feel like they just given more period? I'm not mad I just see it. I stan Zayne so much that I really want him with someone who can give their all to him. So yeah but anyways really enoyed the book & I'll be looking forward to the next one!
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book just blew my mind. Like, I can’t even anymore. This book was so much better than the first one and I can’t believe that I have to wait another six months for the last book. Like, I genuinely don’t think I’m gonna make it.
Let’s just start off with the fact that the pacing and goings on in this book are fantastic. It brings in the best elements of White Hot Kiss, kicks out the shit that didn’t work, amps up the awkward, and adds a creep factor to the whole damn thing.
A Lilin has been born and is now roaming Washington, DC, stealing souls and turning the good people into wraiths. Making things worse? Layla can’t even see auras anymore to see who’s been infected as questions begin to manifest and suspicion and mistrust rear their ugly heads. Who is the Lilin? What does the Lilin look like? Is there a Lilin? Is it Layla?
This book is filled with so much tension – sexual and otherwise – that I could probably have speared it with a fork. While, even now, I’m not feeling the whole Layla-and-Zayne relationship aspect, I can’t deny the spiciness of their scenes together; or the continued intensity of Layla’s interactions with Roth, because Hey! It’s freaking Roth and we all are in love with him.
On top of that, of course, was an escalated ability to make things so unbearably awkward that I was periodically forced to drop my book and run away. Quite literally, too. It was unbearable and I could practically hear Armentrout laughing at my discomfort and rubbing her evil little hands together.
Don’t get me wrong, this book did have issues. A little more editing and fine-tuning would have been nice and some of the dialogue was not so much funny as embarrassingly lame, as were some of the interactions with Zayne – but that might just be colored by my inherent dislike for his character – and some of the characters’ behaviors. Personally, I nearly ripped me hair out as Layla described to me how odd and unhappy Roth behaved when breaking it off with her, the uncharacteristic misery in his gaze as he awkwardly told her that their whole affair had meant nothing to him, and somehow still believed him … especially since it had only been a few weeks since he had willingly sacrificed himself to save her life. Add in to that the fact that quite a few of the descriptions were redundant – apparently Roth and Zayne look absolutely identical below the neck, and thus are described with the exact same words – and, once again, some elements of this book certainly left me cringing.
That being said, everything else in this book was done so right. I really enjoyed reading about the growing rift between Layla and the majority of her clan – though, honestly, I’m still quite confused about how many Wardens are in her clan, as I was under the impression that it was just her, Abbot, Zayne, Dez, Jasmine, and Nicolai, with Danika and Maddox there for a visit – especially leading up into those last, fateful chapters. I also thoroughly enjoyed the way JLA built up the rift between Abbott and Layla, making it clear how much it hurt her and filling me with rage, while also proving that Abbott was in the wrong and there was absolutely nothing Layla could have done to fix it.
What it really comes down to, though, was those last few chapters, where Stone Cold Touchmetamorphosed from a fun story to one that was absolutely epic and undeniable perfection. It was exactly how anyone would want a story to end – with violence and unexpected acts of loyalty in the face of adversity, heart-wrenching confessions the like of which you’d been awaiting hopefully for months, and shocking revelations. The ending was heartbreaking, shocking, terrifying, and absolutely perfect.
I need to know what happens, and I need to know it now! Oh. My. Gosh.
