Cancer stories always get me in my feelings. Always tragic when a full life can’t be lived. I think he’d be happy with how successful his book was.

This book deserves all of the accolades it has received and more. It is the final work of a brilliant man; a neurosurgeon, a neuroscientist, and a gifted writer. As a lifelong devotee to investigating the connection between the brain, mortality, and the purpose of life, we first learn about his journey and how he developed a love for literature and then neurosurgery. Just as he is about to finish his residency and become a well-established doctor, his world is upended when he receives a life-changing diagnosis.
The reflections in this book are incredibly articulate and smart, and the level of depth that he reaches are extremely impressive. You can see his intellect and kindness in every sentence he writes. This is a man that has achieved so much in his short life, and his gift to the world in the form of this book is one-of-a-kind.

This is such a highly rated and loved book but for some reason it didn’t stir my soul. I felt like a lot of it was more medical than philosophical and none of the life lessons seemed to hit home for me.

What’s so devastating about this book is you can feel the book getting increasingly hurried, in the same way time was slipping away from him faster than he could get words down on paper. It’s unfair to make any criticisms about this book feeling unpolished or unfinished- it was a parallel to his life, and that’s the whole point.
