The myth and the creation of River Song, and all of her abilities/ peculiarities are amazing. This is an angle that I never would have thought of in a story of survival and overcoming the odds.
I really enjoyed this story. I think one of the best mysteries in the Firefly series centers on River Tam. What did the alliance do to her and why? Will she ever regain control and emerge a more fully functional individual? Just how dangerous is this girl...Sure, we get some answers in the Serenity movie that was released in 2005. River is lethal when she's not mumbling nonsense. She's a seer, as Mal says.
In the books, we get something that can't really be achieved on television or the big screen. We get to peek inside River's head. Her POV chapters fascinate me. I also appreciate that these books are expanding on our knowledge of the Alliance and the scope of their meddlesome ways.
I am so grateful these books are being written and released. They fill a gap.

Another interesting look into the history not explored on either show or movie. The seriously creepy "hands of blue" appear, and continue to disturb.

I really wanted to finish because I love Firefly and want to read the rest of this series. But the characters just feel off and the story feels like it hasn't progressed any characters in a meaningful way. Was trying to push through but that will just result in a slump.

Exactly what I expected from a Firefly story about the generation ships from Earth-That-Was.
Always enjoy a story set in firefly 'verse, but this was my least favourite in series so far.
Big Damn Hero felt like a Mal origin I could buy, Magnificent 9 embraced the western side of Firefly and Ghost Machine had some cool/dark stuff to say about most of the cast.
Generations to me is the most sci-fi so far and instead of focusing on the original characters it goes for a mysterious/haunting set up before descending into a fast-paced horror-ish climax.
Focusing on a couple of different locations and plot threads, to give feeling that most of novel is happening in a very short amount of time, but it meant that one character would be like 'what was that bang' and I would already know because it was already covered 10 pages ago; made it feel not so much fast-paced but somehow both drawn out and hollow-ish. It bugged me.
Did have some interesting stuff to say about Kaylee (not at all her obsessing over Simon like in show) specifically her interest in human history; something I never really think about when watching firefly. Also had cool stuff with the 'hands of blue' characters, weird and distinct from the show. For moments the villain felt crazy and over the top like a xenomorph from Alien which I enjoyed, again not something that was really in the show.
Overall not a book I will ponder now I finished it, but not so terrible that I probably won't read next firefly book.

What secrets are waiting to be discovered regarding the Earth-The-Was? What dangers are still lurking out on the Black?
Firefly -: Generations by Tim Lebbon is the fourth book in the firefly novel series and the first written by a different author.
With Inara and Book away on personal work, the remaining crew are left to their own devices to find work. It’s just luck (bad or good? To be determined) that while trying to find a lead they come across an honest to God Star map that may lead to something shiny…
What follows is an off treasure hunt in space where the crew discovers a long lost Generation ship that was once used to ferry people during the flight from Earth-That-Was…but they aren’t the first ones…and there might be something aboard far more dangerous..
The crew didn’t get a ton of good lines or stuff to do other than explore…but it did have a ton of useful material on what they think of Earth-Thas-Was and some of the relics well known by then…but also what they don’t know about the old world before mankind ended up in the ‘Verse.
It was interesting seeing them explore and discuss Earth-That-Was like it was some ancient mystery (which makes sense considering its long lost history)…and trying to make sense of what they find while trying to survive the dark secret locked away…
