I first learned about Beryl Markham after reading Paula McLain’s Circling the Sun. I was fascinated by this tenacious woman who lived an interesting life in British East Africa. She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic from East to West. After finding out that she wrote a book detailing highlights of her adventurous life, I just had to read it. It was serendipitous finding a copy of this book amongst my husband’s great grandmother’s books; she was also a female pilot.

Although slow at some times, the brilliant writing was enthralling, as was the story.
It is clear that Beryl Markham was an amazing woman, ahead of her time in so many ways, and I have nothing but respect for her accomplishments as a pilot, horse trainer and author. This book was simply not for me. I did enjoy the second half much more than the first. And again, I’m in awe of her life.
A product of its time in many ways but universal in others, a snapshot of remarkable people doing remarkable things in sequence, and thereby appearing perfectly natural.
I listened to this on Audible and the narrator was great. Beryl’s life as a child was the most fascinating to me. She brought the hunts she participated in, to life. I can’t imagine a child given that kind of life.
I wanted to hear more stories about her flying adventures. For the most part I thought they were too detailed and too focused on others. I wanted more of her thoughts and experiences.
