I loved, loved, loved this book. It was less a book about Markham and more a collection of stories about flying, horse training, and Africa.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did, but with its poetic prose and masterful revelation of details, how could I not love it?

Her writing is outstanding. The topic was enjoyable for me, having lived in that area about 10 years after she did. But, it's her writing!

This book was a total surprise for me. I had never heard of it or of Beryl Markham before stumbling across the book, but between Markham's amazing life growing up in Africa and becoming a female horse trainer and then pilot and her beautiful turns of phrase, I really enjoyed it. Since finishing the book I read some reviews and additional info on Markham, and I honestly do not know why this book is not more well-known as it receives lots of high praise. This will be a new go-to recommendation for me.

This is one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read. Markham balances a lyrical reverence for the natural world with an utterly unsentimental respect for its random beauty and brutality.
Beryl is very much a product of the Colonial English occupation in Africa and her views can be somewhat startling.
Still - she is fascinating and this book raises so many questions.
Her love of Africa, training racing-horses and love of flying define the memoir. Define her passion. Interestingly, she never mentions, even in passing, her 3 husbands and child, that she took two princes as lovers (one eventually becoming King) and was generally in the same orbit as the great and the good. Her time in the UK and America are brushed past. Instead she has defined her narrative (again, with exemplary skill) as she chose.
