I requested this book from Netgalley even before I had read the first one, because I knew that I would love it. I did and I was excited to begin Scala, but as I received the book I was a little disappointed with the length of the book. About 500 pages in the first one and then only 160 in this one? Come on I love this world and I want to know so much more than it is possible to tell in 160 pages.

The number of pages does not reveal space to world building. Unlike the previous book we are thrown directly into action and there isn’t time to stop and e.g. learn a little more about Antrum.

I still like Myla and Lincoln. They are a super couple and simple amazing. Cissy and Mylas parents are cool too. I miss Zeke on the other hand. In the previous book he was Cissy big love, but in this book he is barely mentioned. It is things like this I could use a little more of. Small glimpses of the everyday life where the danger isn’t covering it all.

All in all I still like the story and was entertained through the story. The lack of world building means that this is a 4-star review instead of a 5-star.

Another great read! I had to purchase a copy for myself and add to the collection. Christina Bauer has created one of my favorites series this year. Can't wait for book 3!!!!

I received this free from the publishers via NetGalley

Myla Lewis is now the Great Scala, and her job is to move souls out of purgatory to either Heaven or Hell. However, they are missing Lucifer's Orb which means Myla can only move souls to Hell, and she doesn't want to do that to innocent souls. So Myla decides not to move any souls at all. But they are running out of space, and Adair keeps getting in Myla's way, and tries to take everything she holds dear away from her.

This was way too short for what I wanted, and the main reason why I only rated this 3.5. I just felt like it was a little too rushed, and a little too resolved. Adair annoyed the hell out of me. Really frustrating how she just wouldn't go away. Myla, of course, was her usual bad-ass snarky self and I loved every minute of her. She is by far the best character in this book and she does keep you well entertained. Lucian is also a favourite. He is so genuine and kind and he stands by Myla all the time.

This book had some great action scenes, as well as politics, intrigue and mystery. I liked the story of this book, but as I stated before, I felt it was a little bit too rushed.

I would have really liked to see more of the other realms, but hopefully she might do more of that in the other books.

One problem with the book being so short is I missed some of the other characters who weren't in it much, such as Walker and Cissy.

However, if you are looking for a strong and independent heroine then this is a series that I would definitely recommend.

4 STARS

while i enjoyed the first book more, this was a super solid sequel and i can't wait to get the rest of the series!

things i liked:
1. myla lewis is one of my favorite protagonists. she is relatable, quirky, and completely badass. her hilarious inner monologue is honestly what makes this series so awesome!

^^^ myla AF

2. the whole CONCEPT is just so unique. purgatory and scala and thrax, oh my! i get so sucked into the world.
3. i love books where the problem isn't the parents/friends/boyfriends. myla has awesome, kickass parents, and this book her relationship with lincoln (*makes heart eyes*) develops. people that fight demons together stay together! and then there's her best friend cissy, who is supportive and smart and literally the World's Best Friend™

not as much
1. i didn't think the plot of this book was quite as strong as the first book. it seemed a bit rushed, and slightly one-dimensional. like there was the main plot line, and everyone dealt with it--and that was it. i would've loved to see even more lincoln-myla time and cissy-myla time, and more myla-fighting-demons! that said, it was still a super enjoyable book!

RECAP: STRONG, BADASS GIRLS. PURGATORY. GHOULS AND DEMONS AND ANGELS. DEMON-FIGHTING PRINCES. HILARIOUS INNER MIND.
