Became lost starting from the latter half of the penultimate chapter but will reread after familiarizing myself with the artists & authors Foucault wildly cited; a favorite overall

This is an entertaining book and illustrated quite strongly technologies of control how we create systems that will operate in the subconsciousness to annihilate resistances. A strong critique of modernism and illustration of how white supremacy is the underlying force under these systems.

Terror and unnecessary norms conquer people of dependence.

I think Foucault couldn’t write a bad book. This is his first and was oddly familiar almost the entire time for me. That said, I don’t think it’s the best intro to his writings - go for D&P there.

Speaking of! There’s a lot in Madness&Civ that Foucault returns to in D&P. The final chapter on the Birth of the Asylum really brings this to the fore, so I’m sure there’s plenty scholarship on his analytical development. Curious about coming back to the Derrida essay on this in Writing & Difference.

I’ve seen this one referred to as one of Foucault’s more difficult books. As I’ve mentioned before, he’s a real delight to read, so perhaps describing it as a difficult read is taken with salt. There’s a long midsection which spent what seemed to me an unnecessary amount of time discussing humorism, but that was quite happily made up for by the brilliant final chapter and the even better conclusion, which wanders into ideas about madness and art. Madness is the absence of art.
A soft recommend- come to it after something else from the great MF
