Lois Ehlert does it again with this clever book on animals and shapes. With each flip of the page, there is a new and surprising animal! The design of the illustrations is truly lovely. There are even pages that hint at the shapes to come in the next few animals. At the end of the book, there is an "index" of sorts with the names of the shapes, colors, and animals!

Fun way to present colors and shapes. No narrative, so some kids may lose interest.

This was a winner. Shapes, colors, animals, cutouts. Love it! Only thing to make it better would be a board book version.

CIP: Introduces colors and shapes with illustrations of shapes that form animal faces when placed on top of one another.

Review: The bright, bold colors will appeal to young children. While clever, it was a bit of a stretch to see some of the animals.

SLJ: highly favorable - "brilliant juxtapositions of vibrant primary colors"
ALA Caldecott Committee "masterpiece of graphic design"

Caldecott Honor 1990 - I probably read this shortly after it came out. Still amazed with how it ties so much together.

Amazing cut out illustrations of bright colors and shapes. Some of the animals are difficult to identify, but otherwise wonderful!

I love this book because it’s versatile. You can use it with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to review colors, shapes, and animals.
