An informational text about the effects of humans and their mismanagement of Earth's resources, is something that is always going to be a hefty read. This review for the audio version places that at a listening time of over 17 hours, which means that if you want to use it as a reference for further study, you're going to need to get your own copy rather than relying on libraries.

This has got to be one of THE most frustrating calls to action there ever was. As someone who cares a great deal about the details and the possible outcomes of this crisis, I still come away from this book feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of CONTENT. It's a valuable read, and in equal measures inspiring and daunting.

Greta Thunberg has compiled a group of papers written by expert science writers, journalists (and even a bit from Margaret Attwood), and her own impassioned chapters are self narrated in the audiobook.  Thunberg et al. explain a situation that has been caused by flaws in our perception, deceit, lies and obfuscation by Capitalist interests, and butt-covering, under-motivated politicians.

Notes on the Audiobook version.
Ugh some of the enunciation in this is .. irksome. These Brit narrators are frequently awful when pronouncing non-English names and words.

Oh, is THAT how you pronounce her name?! That's probably I have heard how Thunberg ought to be pronounced.. again the Media are frequently awful when pronouncing non-English names and words.

What is going on with the chapters in this? The Penguin Audio publication of this title does not appear to have specific chapter breaks. The book itself is conveniently divided into sections with subchapters, but NO such luck with the audio. There is a version of the Penguin Audiobook available on CalibreAudio; a UK charity that provides free audiobooks for text disabled people from countries that are signatories to "The Marrakesh Treaty" - to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled. Unfortunately they do not introduce chapter breaks into this publication, rather it is just broken up into roughly 10minute audio files. This makes it very difficult to navigate back and forth.

The TL:DR is we need to make permanent changes to our lifestyle to make sure millions don't die. People are already starting to die in poor nations that don't have access to air conditioning and other technologies. These people are the poorest and those who have done the least to cause the problem, but nobody is acting to save them or those in technologically rich countries.

• The media needs to make a huge fuss. More people are going to die than COVID has killed (and that was probably just one disease was likely caused BY the climate crisis.. and there will be more). We need to start acting like this is URGENT because it's a real problem and needs URGENT action now.

• Democracy will save us, if only we motivate the populace to PRESSURE government, to act NOW, and with transparency and accountability: there can't be dodges for emissions targets.

• Late Stage Capitalism needs to be done away with, so that we can focus on concrete problems and resource distribution, rather than $$ on financial reports.

• Transport systems and infrastructure need to be rethought so that no-emission mass transit and  shared/community transit replace individual car ownership.

• Just stop farming cows. They turn pasture into methane like nothing else, and that is so much more reactive than regular old CO2.

• Colonization and Meritocracy ideals need to be addressed and reparation and local governance and custodianship need to be supported. We need to stop grabbing and Producing, and start supporting the Earth beneath us. We need to stop trying to OWN land, and start looking after the systems that support life on it.

• There is only so much that individual "consumer power" can do. Be practical. Influence others. Do what you can.. but ultimately the power is with the Megacorps, the Ultra-Rich, and governments. Make a huge noise, and do your best. We managed to throw our lives upside-down for Lockdown.. so we can learn a lot about what is possible from that.. but we need everyone to work together.

There is a lot in this book, described brilliantly by popular science writers. It's relatively easy to understand, but it is a LOT of bad news, history of mismanagement, broken deals, and historical context. There is a lot of information about the science - tipping points and feedback loops and things, and wind and water currents that distribute carbon, aerosols, water, and heat energy. If you ever wanted to know why we get weird weather extremes ("Global Weirding") when the average temperature in a system goes up, this is your book. Over time we can expect more wild-fires, heat-waves, and extreme weather events.

People need to educate themselves about this. The Media needs to do the hard work and cover all the scary stuff and educate useful changes. Our Governments need our petition to do make specific changes.
