This book was a warm hug. The way Rebecca tackles huge themes like grief, loss of faith, duty to self vs others and manages to still make it sound like poetry should not be overlooked. Her writing is always beautiful, but this story in particular stands well above the others I’ve read of hers.

I have heard some suggest the language and Scottish folk terminology used in this book make it hard to read. I did an audiobook/kindle combo and was sucked into the story immediately. I HIGHLY suggest an audio version if it’s available to you.

Good book, but I was not satisfied with the ending 😭
It was also kind of slow at first

this was a good classic fantasy. not too heavy but with solid world building and an interesting plot that kept me engaged. i thought i would hate it at first when it started out with a male POV, but i really enjoyed it. it didn’t grab me deeply emotionally, but it was entertaining and i devoured it in one sitting basically. this world is super interesting and i feel like it had a lot of potential, but it’s being done well for a nice duology. the romance isn’t focal but still enjoyable, and the characters are all around pretty likeable, especially the little girls. rebecca ross seems to be a pretty reliable author for me, but i find so far that she doesn’t get me too emotionally invested in her characters. that might also be a product of third person multi-POV storytelling, though. it’s more prose-y but definitely harder to connect deeply with one or two characters for me
