I didn’t think I would really like a Scottish inspired fantasy book, but it worked fairly well. Sometimes the prose did cross the line from lyrical to stilted and overdone, but the prose was still important for the atmosphere of the story. Not entirely my taste, hence the semi-conservative rating. Good character dynamics though. This could have been shorter and moved a bit faster, or just been a standalone, which is actually what I expected. It would have been better as a stand-alone in my opinion. Also a lot of the reasoning behind main events was pretty weak, to the point of being plot holes. 
But overall I read it quickly and found it engaging.

Very middle of the road. This was the first book I got with BOTM when it was first released, and its sat on my TBR for so long purely because she’s thick and intimidating! Definitely could have been 120 pages shorter. I just couldn’t develop an emotional attachment to any of the characters. If this hadn’t been for a bookclub I probably would have DNFd, but did enjoy it much more the last 3rd of the book. Probably won’t finish the duology.

I'm unsure how much I need to LOVE a book for it to deserve 5 stars. I haven't read that many books in the last 10 years. But I truly LOVED this novel. 

The setting is gorgeous, the characters are fleshed out and lovable, the prose might seem too embroidered for some people but I thought it was absolutely beautiful. The emotional beats were impeccable. The mystery kept me reading to find out more. The plot was dense with twists but it was also allowed time to breathe. 

This was the author's first attempt at fantasy for adults, and it really did feel more emotionally mature. I could relate to it more than I can YA nowadays (I'm not 14 anymore, I'm 29).

5 stars.
