So many criticisms of this book are about one thing only, and that is so and so didn't get a certain book in. While I do feel that putting every single Virginia Woolf in is a little too much, it can easily be improved by limiting one book per author. That way, even Ayn Rand might have a change of nomination.

Obviously this "list" isn't perfect. No Shakespeare, no Homer, no Virgil, no Elie Wiesel, no Kent Haruf, no Herman Wouk, among many other favorites. But the managing editor specifically says he knows it's not perfect and that it couldn't possibly ever be perfect. This book about books is meant to spur discussion, and it does that well. I've discovered deeply compelling authors and works listed here that I'm sure I never would have heard of otherwise, and for that alone I'm thankful.

I don't purchase books too often, but I knew I had to have this one. I am using it also as a journal. I was disappointed to find that while I thought I was well-read, I have only read about 100 from this book, although several of the titles sit on my shelf. This is a MUST HAVE for any book lover.

I'm surprised at how many of these books I've watched as a movie and not read.

I don't like that some authors have more than one novel on the list, but it's a cool idea and a nice book to dip into when I can't decide on what to read next.

I bought this book in March next year, despite the 'must' in the title. I confess that I have an inherent mistrust of books that exhort, rather than invite, me to do things.

Other people's lists are always interesting. Here is a link to the review I just posted on Amazon.com:
