I was expecting it to be more of a self help book, but it mostly consisted of anecdotes, thus a history book. There is, for instance, a chapter called "find your purpose in life" which is mainly about sumo, plus a couple of pages on ballet.

This book was a disappointment. It has great potential but gets lost in anecdotes and the general summary could be: love what you do, do what you love. Don’t know, maybe that’s the essence but then I don’t need a hundred pages for that.

Ikigai is a concept I use when I teach, the content based on the articles I read online. However, I have been quite dissatisfied in my own knowledge of the concept.
Mogi's book provides the reader with an understanding of the term within the Japanese culture. It's written in an easy conversant tone that I was moving through the chapters quickly.
The book however doesn't directly give you a how-to. It doesn't outline a way to discover your ikigai. It speaks of Ikigai, it's five pillars and it's up to the reader to glean from it their own way of finding their ikigai.
