The Mermaid's Child

adventurous dark emotional sad medium-paced

It kept me going but only because I kept hoping it would get better than just incredibly sad. But instead it just ended. Disappointing. The storytelling wasn’t bad-very visual and at times that was too much for me, but-whew. I found this depressing and lacking mermaids.

Had I known what I was getting into with this book, I wouldn't have read it. The story is so dark for this character yet I was compelled to keep reading it. I found myself thinking, "what now" when reading about the next experience Malin had and how unrealistic it was that she kept having these experiences...and yet...I still found the series of events to work in this story. It wasn't a fun summer read as I had hoped but one that gave me pause and unexpected trains of thought.

just 3 stars for now because I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book

Malin Reed's beautifully written yet harrowing tale takes us on a journey from a small village, across deserts and oceans, encountering a circus, a con man, slavery and finally finding love and family.

Okay, so, this book was written very lyrically, and it wasn't bad. The problem is that it is marketed as something very different than it is! The back cover blurb talks about mermaids and fantasy, and feels a bit uplifting--that is *not* what this book is. It seems to be more along the lines of historical fiction, and . . . well, not uplifting. A "meditation on an adventurous but lonely life of struggle" seems more appropriate. It's not the sort of thing I would read normally, and if the blurb had reflected that, I would have known to stay away, haha.

If you like historical fiction though, particularly about the visceral struggles of being a woman in a man's seafaring world, you'll probably love it!

This book should be such a fun read. The concept of the story makes you want to read it and instantly think it will take you on a magical journey ride. I had to make myself read this book to the tenth chapter. There was nothing exciting or charming about this book. Malin's grandparents are awful and put the whole family down. I had no desire to read further and find out if Malin finds her happy ending.

I feel like I wasted my time reading this. I was so excited to find out if Malin would discover who her mother was and then to be let down and find her back where she started. I dont find there was enough adventure and excitement to still make the story good and Im easily captivated by stories that other people may find hard to read.
