This book took me by surprise. It wasn't what I imagined when I read the synopsis, but it was better. I saw character development in Sam, she was funny and courageous, and Elsie was damn right adorable. The twists and turns were ones I did not see coming and I loved the guessing game it had going on. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and I'd recommend it to anyone.

3.5 stars would be more accurate. The storyline felt a little too familiar, but a solid read.

A decent enough story from the husband and wife writing team that is Nicci French. Making my way through the backlist and enjoyed this much more than The Memory Game. Looking forward to the next one!

A really interesting early Nicci French, I felt like a lot of what is done in this book is later explored further in their later books. For example Elsie reminded me strongly of Poppy in their latest book, and I think this was their first exploration of the theme of the child as a witness. I really liked the main characters and I found the structure quite unconventional. I now only have four Nicci French books left and I want to read them all right away! A good audiobook too.
