(Disclosure: I am resisting the temptation to lace this review with song lyrics and one-liners from movies. )
Screenwriter Alison Rose Greenberg spins a tale about a woman who has grown up embracing the unknown and the uncharted future ahead of her. It has served her well as she faced frequent moves as a child always starting over and sticking out from her peers (plus she is the epitome of ‘free spirit’). Written in first person, Zoey Marks takes us quickly through her past experiences as a bridesmaid for 3 failed weddings, and while she is not truly responsible for them falling apart, she feels like she might be the curse. In walks swoon-worthy, cousin of her best friend, slightly older Rylan. And damn. He is swoony. He sees her. He adores her. She is swept off her feet. There is just one, slight hang up between them.
Greenberg doesn’t bow to the expectations of a capital “R” Romance, so don’t be fooled by the illustrated, cute cover. This book is full of romance, not only for Zoey, but for her supporting characters, too. There are a few steamy scenes. But there is also hurt and sadness, and worst of all…heartbreak.
I have a feeling this book will be all over my insta-feed with polarizing views. I sit somehow in the middle. I appreciate that Greenberg took a less predictable path, but she kind of broke my heart at the end of it all. The ‘coda’ on the end just seemed a little harsh in the light of day for me. I see what it is pointing at, but I probably could have done without it, and had more respect for the MC at the end.
Thanks so much for the ARC via NetGalley!

Thank you NetGalley and st martins press for the eARC.
I’m honestly not even wanting to write a review. This is gonna be more of a rant.
Zoey Marks is the MC in this book and the most insufferable character ever. I debated DNGing the book multiple times but I was hoping that she would get better. I was wrong.
Zoey came off as entitled and selfish. The way she kept announcing “ I Zoey Marks” had me rolling my eyes too much.
I felt like the author tried to hard to make her sound sophisticated and it just did not work for me.
For example;
“Forever? Aren’t you allergic to that word?”
“I was allergic but I’ve just started taking emotional Claritin.”
Also the cheating that came out of nowhere was not okay. I’m not okay with cheating but this was just gross.
I definitely should have skipped this one.

This book was not what I expected - after reading the blurb I thought it would be a more lighthearted rom com, but instead was treated to more of a chick lit book. Unfortunately, this is not what I wanted at all, so I was disappointed. I think if the blurb had portrayed the book more accurately, this would have saved me from reading it at a point where I was not wanting something heavy.
If you want a women’s or chick lit book, this could be a good choice. I cried, a lot. I found it to be very emotional and the feelings/experiences of the MC to be tangible. The moments that were to be funny or embarrassing wound up being cringey to me, and I found the MCs to be unlikable when they get to the wedding. I’m not sure how to rate this one. It was well written, but I just didn’t want to read it. I wanted a rom com and felt bamboozled by the description.
I received an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. The opinions are mine.
