I can’t rate Jane Austen anything lower than four, but holy shit were her characters insufferable. Fanny you were SO boring
slow-paced
I really tried to like this book, but I found it so slow and uneventful, and Fanny Price so judgmental and uptight. The only thing to root for was the relationship between her and her FIRST COUSIN who calls her his SISTER. Why. The ending felt extremely rushed and unromantic, meanwhile the start of the book takes 200 pages for the protagonist to do or say anything at all.
When I started the book, I picked up on a particular vibe. I figured Jane Austen would not do me the pain of a cousins romance—first cousins, at that—but I was wrong. While the book itself wasn’t that boring and I appreciated the character building and the social commentary, it’s my least favorite of Austen’s work. The more I tried to get behind the cousin marriage, I ended up disgusting myself. At least Austen gave us an interesting, multidimensional protagonist; wrong. In my copy, it was around page 210 in which I felt that Fanny was beginning to receive the attention from Austen that one might give to a protagonist. Mansfield park itself had more characterization and interest surrounding itself than Fanny, which, I guess, supports the property being the “titular character.”
It really wasn’t that bad, but I will never forgive Jane Austen for the incest. That was gross.

3.5 ish. Not my favourite Austen. Secondary characters felt cookie cutter, and the whole story was more like social commentary than a romance in my opinion
