I didn't hate the book but it was sort of annoying at some times. There were some pretty good stories at the same time that there were ones that just didn't make any sense when you read it lazily, and I just didn't have the patience to read it properly and try to understand. While his language and style might be very interesting and attention grasping at times, it can also become tiring. Sometimes, you couldn't really tell if he was saying some things to critique them or if he thought they were really deep - when, actually, they were just the sort of thing one of these edgy teenage boys would say to feel cool and anti capitalist, or that an old, intolerant, white man would say to criticise today's generation (come to think of it, same difference).
Something that also bothered me was that all of his stories were the same. Like they all had the same format, and it gets REALLY repetitive at a point.
Despite all of that, it was an interesting book to read. I had fun with it, overall. I guess I'd just recommend a person to not try to read all the tales at once? Maybe if you read them over a long period of time, these things I mentioned previously won't be much of a bother.

The New York Times dubbed this work in this way: "Palahniuk doesn't write for tourists. He writes for hardcore devotees drawn to the wild, angry imagination on display and the taboo-busting humor."

I almost gave up finishing the book but I was glad I didn't because the last few stories have been gems. It was my first time reading a work from Chuck Palahniuk and it made me have mixed feelings. This may have stemmed from the fact that the author is not afraid to venture into the ugly and the unconventional. He doesn't hesitate, he doesn't sugarcoat, and he jumps straight into what can be deemed as the grotesque acts, the perversions, the profanities, and the eccentricity of society.

You can't go wrong with Palahniuk. While the plots in these stories aren't his best, the interesting way Palahniuk writes more than makes up for it. And you can tell that he seeks to grow as a wrote, try new things. Tunnel of Love and Inclinations were both great.

There were some really entertaining stories in here, but overall it was nothing special. Most of the stories were based mostly on being absurd and shocking, without any good characters or plot, which got pretty old.

4.25 STARS

Make Something Up was my first Palahniuk read. I enjoyed some of the stories such as Knock Knock, Red Sultan's Big Boy, Inclinations to name a few. Palahniuk's writings was a whole new experience for me. It's weird, twisted and fun.

Overall, it's a mixed bag of haunting and disgusting tales that will throw off a lot of people, while feeling home to many others as evident by its reception.

3.5⭐

I originally gave this 3 stars because while I enjoyed the stories I didn't feel as wowed by them as I expected to. Now, a few days after finishing, I find myself thinking over the stories. I am seeing them in new lights, and finding the full pleasure that I expected from this collection. I can't wait to read it again. Much love for Chuck Palahniuk. I should know by now that with his writing, if at first I don't love it, it will eventually become a favorite.

The least terrible thing by Chuck Palahniuk I've read in about eight years. Some of these stories are actually good. But dropping racist shit out of nowhere for no reason is really distracting. The stories generally get better as the book goes on. Almost didn't want to continue after the first story. I get it, your dad's a dick and you're a moron but it just reads like something written by an adolescent who thinks offensive = edgy = cool. There are some terrible stories in here, but there's also stuff that reminds me what Chuck can do when he's not writing faux-"transgressive" bullshit.
