The inclusion of Voodou and a scattered amateur sleuth with absolutely no idea what she's doing help this mystery stand out. Definitely interesting enough to pick up the sequel.
There is nothing redeeming about Roman Frost, and I cheered in the parking lot scene when he said he was done with Reina. But then he came back at the end, and I'm deeply distraught about that.

This book got off to a fine start, but quickly lost me in the ways it flattened its characters and mined the realities of police brutality for a thin urban fantasy plot while simultaneously made a complicit, religious bigot cop the ongoing love interest.

While it was interesting to get a mystery story from the POV of a fairly unusual literary character, the pace was tedious and the detail  were sometimes too irrelevant to the storyline for this book to be interesting from a plot perspective. I finished it because I was too far in to not finish it, but I don't have an interest in picking up the sequel.
