A lovely middle novel to a trilogy that does not feel like a filler. Full of political intrigue and delving more into the complexions of the magical system the first book introduced, it’s also tense and full of so many wonderful characters.

This book had me gaping like a fish at times. I did not see some of the plot twists coming and I am really glad to have finally continued it

"I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted."

This is a master class in storytelling, high fantasy world building, characters, in short everything. It’s such an incredibly crafted world and story that once I started this book I pretty much didn’t stop reading till I was done. I’m also extremely impressed that I was able to get into this story fairly easily, considering it has been 5 years since I read The Final Empire.

There were approximately 60 different plot points going at every given time and every single one had so much depth and attention to detail that it worked perfectly. Beneath the big story the big theme this book dealt with was belonging and meaning. So many characters had struggles with what they wanted to do and who they are, with heartbreaking parallels drawn throughout. I got so attached that reading the last Part, where every part of the story peaked and exploded, I was either crying or frozen in shock.
Reading the first book you think you know what the series is going to be about but then the last part explodes in your face and you have no idea anymore. Reading the second book you slowly think you’re grasping what is actually happening, only for the end to be a nuclear bomb this time.

Now just some random unconnected rambles:
