I've become a serious fan of this sort of setting and genre combination - a planet asunder and the story of difficult survival upon it, with both science fiction and fantasy tropes blending seamlessly. I really recommend it if you like this sort of thing, of people searching for ways not only to survive but also to learn of their world.

It is a great standalone novel for it, which is refreshing to me because I personally seem to always find long series that deal with this sort of story, setting and tone, like N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth and DaVaun Sanders' World Breach. (So if you like them, definitely check this one out, and vice versa.)
