I think this is was what I wished Red, White & Royal Blue would be. I know that book has a huge fandom, but it wasn't my favorite in the slightest. However, Boyfriend Material was absolutely adorable.

It had the fake dating trope (which I love), a little bit of grump and sunshine, and a whole lot of "aww" moments! I found myself hooked from the very beginning and desperate to know how the relationship would play out.

Yes, I gave it four stars even though it's not like the most memorable book ever or whatever. There were some really meaningful moments that had me a little teary-eyed, there were funny moments, and I totally loved the goofy jokes that the coworker never understood.

Basically, it was great and I can't wait for the sequel!

Not-exactly enemies to lovers.

Luc's cynism and self-deprecating doesn't let him see beyond himself most the time and also leads him to look and talk down to his family and friends. Which, as most romantic dramas, leads to miscommunication, which is really the plot.

Turns funny and cute towards the middle. Happy I heard the audiobook, but not sure I'd re-read it anytime soon.

 - BOYFRIEND MATERIAL is the kind of book that feels like a warm hug. Who doesn't love working through childhood trauma with banter and hijinks?
- Honestly I keep trying to think of more smart words to put here and wind up just sort of waving my arms around with how much I loved it. It's all the best things about romance novels.
- Plus, some truly hilarious secondary characters. I would read a whole book on Alex bumbling through his office job.
- Also, the audiobook is fantastic.

love love love love this. I don't even know where to begin.

It's so FUNNY. And HEARTBREAKING. And so relatable. Sometimes characters tend to be larger than life but everyone here felt so real. Lucien's
struggle with his mental health and being unable to clean his room, and the moments he talks to his friends about his struggles,
were so real. It's a reality for a lot of people, so to see it written with so much care was really important.

Also, My copy was filled with me yelling in the margins. "can y'all stop flirting for FIVE MINUTES." "fellas this is GAY gay" "do u think they know they're already in love?"

I really do get images from his book stuck in my head at random times.
Lucien having a panic attack on the floor of his bathroom, Lucien rolling over to whisper "my dad has cancer" to Oliver in the dark, Lucien being stood up by his dad...
I haven't felt so much empathy for a character in so long. I cannot describe how protective over Lucien I feel. But also, I loved everyone in this book. The ensemble was incredible.
Except Jon Flemming, and Oliver's family they can choke xoxo <3

Overall, I loved this. 5/5 would read again and recommend to everyone everywhere.

I like to dip my toe into queer romance here and there, and these books are the reason why. This was a funny, quick witted, enjoyable read about a "fake relationship" gone 'real'. At times, it got surprisingly genuine, but for the most part it was an idealized story about a hopeless mess up of a guy and his hopeless romantic counterpart. This hit a lot of the standard beats you might expect from typical romance book but hey, if it aint broke... The queer aspect is definitely what kept me interested, but don't make the mistake of assuming that the plot could easily be translated for a straight couple. The 'queer variable' was of central importance to the development of the characters and I found to be done very sensitively. There were a few subplots that I wish were tied up better or had abrupt endings, but that didn't take away from this book's strength: the characters and their arcs. While not exactly realistic, the characters were all charming in their own way and had a very distinct voice that kept the story interesting with every chapter (I love every member of the friend groups!). The prose was nothing to write home about, but it didn't need to be in order to tell the story that it did.

As far as romance goes, this was nothing revolutionary. But it didn't need to be revolutionary to be good. And it was very good!

hmmm yesss give me that fake dating, kinda dislike eachother-to lovers trope.
there was a lot of drama due to miscommunication and the relationship was a little toxic but overall i really liked it, also the writing was too british for me haha so i only understood like 75% of the book.  ALSO i didnt like that everything got resolved at the end, i wish we could have seen more of their future relationship :(

I enjoyed every second of this book. The dialogue was so funny and witty and kept me laughing. And the humor was beautifully balanced with the heavier/ more emotional moments. Also Luc is the most relatable and lovable asshole ever.

The writing itself was so easy to read, and read a lot like an actual internal dialogue. Which was extremely refreshing and entertaining.

All of the secondary characters were so unique and lovable, which is an impressive feat considering their very limited page-time.

I don’t think there was anything I didn’t like about this book.

I love how the ending circled back to the beginning of Luc and Oliver’s relationship. It was just so beautiful!
