This book should be sacred texts for all writers.

I'm a reformed pantser currently standing in the shambles of her previous novels. There is no structure, no plot, no goals, no motivation...merely complex characters floating about in the space of my imagination. As fun as it is to write, no one would pay a nickel for it.

Enter K.M. Weiland.

I've since recognized that I function much better in organization, with anything in life let alone something as complex as a novel, and I've always admitted I have a fetish for charts and graphs. You should see how beautiful my current outline in Scrivener is, labels and metadata galore.

Be kind to yourself. Push aside former thoughts of outlining suppressing creativity. Try this book, give your story a shot at succeeding, and structure. You won't ever look at fiction the same again.

You've got to learn the rules before you break them, right?

Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story by K.M. Weiland is a book devoted to teaching the rules of story and scene structure. The author describes how structure will enhance a novel, providing the shape a story will take. She describes each element of story and scene structure in great detail, even going so far as to pinpoint exactly when in the novel each element should take place. I believe that learning and understanding these rules is important in making a story all that it can be. Plus, when you know the rules, deciding exactly when and why to break them (which shouldn't be often) becomes much more effective.

Structuring Your Novel is a book that I will refer to often when I'm planning out a new story, or revising an existing story. The way the K.M. Weiland writes makes it very easy to understand the concepts she is teaching in the book. I appreciated the book/movies examples that she uses to highlight each element of structure. She uses the same examples throughout the book so that you can see the natural progression of story structure.

I did feel like the author tended to be a little repetitive at times, but that is just a minor complaint. This book is full of great concepts that any writer should understand and utilize in their own stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about how to construct an effective story, no matter what genre you write.

Weiland does a fantastic job of breaking down her own process, which is a refreshing take on the writing craft that isn't just a revisiting of McKee or classic writing craft books.

Recommend for anyone still trying to lock down their writing process. Definitely for someone on the pantser/plotter spectrum closer to plotter than pantser.

Well-written and organized. Helpful. Framed in a way that makes reading it feel less like being lectured and more like talking with a friend who's excited about the topic they know. I'll be reading the others in the series.
