I wasn't going to write this, but having started the fourth book I realized that I have to write this if only to get it off my chest. (Jane/Winter)
Jane is an abuser. I don't mean it like she physically hurts Winter, but she is unsupportive and emotionally manipulative. From the very early descriptions of their relationship it was all about Jane persuading Winter to do things she didn't want to do. Then it was asking Winter, a young girl to kill, not in self defense and the heat of the moment, but in a cold back stabbing way.
What we are shown of their relationship in present day is even worse. Winter, who has found place in the army, is not at all supported by Jane. Instead of smoothing things over and helping with some of the internal politics, she undermines Winter's authority. When she is confronted with her behavior she runs off to drink every local pub dry. Winter says Jane is too stubborn to admit when she is wrong, but that is not stubbornness it is emotional manipulation.
Finally when Winter wants to make a clean break Jane goes to her rooms to confront her yet again. She is incapable of letting Winter go do her own thing. She is incapable of letting Winter get out of her control. The final scene, where she shoots Winter and only by some luck manages not to kill her should be the final straw in their relationship. You don't excuse an attempt to kill away. It isn't something you can say sorry for. Jane intended to if not kill, at least hurt Winter, and you don't get back from that.
My reason for writing this, is that I am afraid that the Winter Jane relationship will be presented as something romantically tragic, as opposed to violently and emotionally abusive. I truly hope I am wrong.
