I’m so sorry but I did not enjoy reading this, it took forever! If it wasn’t a classic i’d rate it lower. Although for being written in the 1800s it was really good.

Pacing is a bit odd in this book as Dostoyevsky seems to play with plodding plots/maniacal monologues/tension building in contrast with sudden bursts of action/violence. While it shows writerly range, a 600 page book maybe could’ve had a bit less of the slow bits. Overall though, great themes, wonderful descriptions, very complex characters, and an impressive web of characters and motives and plot. Almost reads like a play at times with very cinematic moments in which St. Petersburg suddenly feels small and certain characters bypass others on bridges/streets as if the city were condensed onto a single stage.
