4.25 ughhh this book ate. Like after my reading slump this was what I needed to bring me back to life. It just had everything I loveeee. the eccentric characters, unique subplots of architecture, Antartica, Seattle culture, and ofc over-invested middle aged mothers. I realize I love the niche of suburbia rich moms deeply connected to schools. Basically anything liane moriarty/big little lies esque.
The format of it being emails and different forms of communication for the dialogue really clicked and flowed well with me, and something about Bernadette was just relatable in her inspired and eclectic/disorganized personality. just muah, chefs kiss for me. Also just the humor and little lines just were so funny to me idk why, it was just my sense of humor.

Fun. Maybe not the best book ever, but the only one in a long time I couldn't put down. A nice light caper that's made me want to go to Antarctica.
DNF at 25%. This book is unhinged and chaotic. I hate the letter/email format. So many random side quests that don’t add to the plot (fishing vests?, r*pes and re-r*pes?, The Beatles?). I’ve read a quarter of the book and nothing has happened besides a stupid neighbor squabble. Why was this book so popular?

I have heard that this book was a must-read for a while, but never picked it up. I’ll be honest - the movie trailer made me more curious. So I picked it up - wow. It was so well written, with social commentary as well as witty humor and relationship development. The author writes from multiple perspectives and tells the story in such a unique way. I definitely recommend this book if you love family dynamics, clever humor and random adventures.
I got a little lost a few times towards the end, but it got 4 stars for making me laugh.
Some parts of this book were really good and interesting and other parts I found really slow. Just okay, but I have definitely read worse.
I think it probably would've been better if I knew more about Seattle. As it is, it was amusing, but not laugh-out-loud amusing. That being said, I devoured the book and was fairly chill with the plotting except for Soo-Lin and when Bernadette went missing (which is ironically the whole premise of the book). I did find it a little ridiculous that the whole thing was based on a cruise to Antartica, but I think that was the point. I wish there had been a little more closure.
