A sweet, clean romance with likeable characters and a plot that is not TOO dumb (but kinda is). Writing is a bit fluffy (and at least one section made me mentally cringe from a grammatical point of view), and I didn't care for the Neighborly App segments, but if this book has me remembering it fondly after 3 days, it deserves to go on my "read" shelf.
I was provided an ARC copy by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Ok, so I ate this book up, I laughed out loud quite a few times and that's how I measure a good romcom because it can be difficult to get that out loud reaction from someone when they're reading and to accomplish it, that's a good author.
Second chance isn't usually my favourite trope but when it's done well it can be so good. This was definitely done well, there's no dragged out miscommunication it's just 2 people who made a mistake and their journey back to each other. Pat & Lindy are so great together, but they have some obsticles to overcome and that's mainly to do with themselves. Pat is an ex football player with ADHD that's known for flaking and making impulsive decisions but he's also so funny with his golden retriever energy, but that isn't what Lindy needs, she needs stability as she's currently raising her niece.
- second chance
- forced proximity
- marriage of convenience
- no cheating
- slow burn
- HEA
- No spice but also no fade to black

A cute and sweet, small town, second chance romance. Not steamy at all. Good road trip with the family read. 3.75 stars. ✨
I live in a super small, super rural area so I love that this book started out with perks of small town living…so relatable for me. (How cute is a town called Sheet Cake where the true locals are known as sheeters?!) So for me, this rom-com was so relatable and what really set it apart from others books in this genre is how the author describes small town life and things that come with it (incorrect nicknames, gossip mongers, festivals). Plus, the characters were naturally compelling. Pat, “a big brute of a man who is painfully gentle” tries his best at a second chance with Lindy, a local writer who is raising her niece. I highly recommend this book for the grill scene alone-I am not sure so have ever laughed so hard and for so long at a single scene in a book!
This was an enjoyable read! Very slow burn second chance grumpy (FMC) sunshine (MMC) and so cute!! While it felt slightly rushed in places and super slow in others it’s a fun read! Such a good representation of autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, adoption and addiction as well.
Whenever I’m having a bad day, or (ahem) a bad week, I can always count on Emma St. Clair and her sweet romantic comedies to cheer me up! I absolutely LOVED The Buy-In.
Emma St. Clair kept me laughing, quite literally, out loud with her characters’ antics and the hilarious, dramatic scenes that unfolded in this second-chance-at-love, marriage-of-convenience mashup. I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters, Patrick and Lindy, who were down-to-earth and fully relatable!
The romance was the perfect combination of spark and sizzle and I personally loved how Pat pursued Lindy and determined to love her well. There were so many moments that really touched my heart. Speaking of heart, I loved how each of the main characters had a close, deep relationship with their family members and friends. Those secondary characters added to the story in a really tangible way, making it even more enjoyable! Throw in the small-town vibes and I was completely won over.
I found The Buy-In to be a quick, easy read with a creative story line that kept me highly engaged. In fact, I had trouble putting it down! Overall, this was a great read that was fun, flirty, and most certainly heartwarming. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series and I highly recommend Emma St. Clair’s Love Cliche series as well.
