A typical detective chasing serial killers story - but I enjoyed it a lot, it helped me get a little step further out of my reading slump.

I wanted to read this book as the first book was recommended to me by a friend and I instantly loved this series. The first and third book still creep me out to this day, so I was looking forward to reading this book and this book broke my heart.

This main character of this series is a detective named Robert Hunter. He is supposed to be going to Hawaii for a much-needed break. However, he gets a call from his Captain to come into the office. When Robert gets there, the FBI are there and they need his help. In rural Wyoming, a freak accident happened which led the Sheriff’s Department to arrest a man for a possible double homicide, but further investigation suggests a much more horrifying discovery – a serial killer who has been kidnapping, torturing and mutilating victims all over the US for at least twenty-five years. So why have the FBI asked for Robert Hunter’s help? The suspect has said seven words since being in custody: I want to speak to Robert Hunter. The FBI want Robert to run a series of interviews with the suspect. Those interviews begin to reveal terrifying secrets that no one could’ve foreseen, including the real identity of a killer so elusive that no one, not even the FBI, had any idea he existed until now.

I like this book; I think Chris Carter is a genius or a secret serial killer. The mystery and the suspense is brilliant and enough to keep you hooked. This book has me audible gasping and wanting to throw it at a wall. I was on edge and frustrated with Lucien the whole way through this book. This book made my heart hurt for Robert. Since the start of this series, I have always said I just want Robert to be happy and be with someone and after learning what happened when he was a beat cop, made me understand and made me want to give him a hug. I liked the edition of the FBI agent that Robert was working with and as always when I like someone in a book, something always bloody happens to them. I love Captain Blake wanting to protect Robert and being like you ain’t going, go on your bloody holiday.

I just missed her and Garcia during this book, I loved the banter and how they all protect each other and felt like Robert was being fed to the wolves during this book. I wanted Garcia and Blake to save Robert in the end and not the boss of the FBI. Another thing I would say is a weakness, for me personally, is the short chapters. I just prefer bigger chapters. However, in this book, it did fit well with Chris Carter’s writing style where it usually doesn’t work for me. I was hooked that after a while the short chapters didn’t bother me as they usually would with other authors.

Overall, the book was an easy and quick read and because the writing was amazing, the storyline gives me the creeps and it was overall brilliant I gave it four stars. I cannot wait for the next book in the series and see how much the next bad guy creeps me out.
