The Lord Ruler has reigned for a thousand years over the Final Empire with an iron fist. The nightly mists and the falling ash have stifled all life and hope in the evil land. A thieving crew leader, Kelsier, discovers Vin, a 16-year old street urchin, and teaches her Allomancy - magic involving metals. Will their ambitious plan of overthrowing the Final Empire inspire hope, or will the Lord Ruler weed out this rebellion as well and continue with his indomitable rule?

I am simply in awe of the magic system that Sanderson has created in The Final Empire. With clear cut limitations and consequences, the hard magic system holds well under close scrutiny. Some of my favorite chapters involved the fast paced action sequences that saw Kelsier going through the imperial guards. Those really highlighted the potential of Allomancy and Sanderson's creativity does the rest. The plot and the setting are quite unique IMO and everything is tied together perfectly.

My main concern is with Sanderson's writing style. I understand people love his books so I may be out of my element when talking about this. Yes, his style is very accessible which makes for an easy read, but time and time again I found myself rolling my eyes at the dialogues and wondering why is it that I'm not able to connect with the story better. What really ground my gears was when a sentence trailed off with an ellipsis and ended with an emphatic word. Something like... this. Boy, I grew tired of that fairly quickly.

There were times when the story seemed punctuated, but was brought back on track quickly. My actual rating would be more like 3.5 but that doesn't matter much.

I finally entered the Cosmere after having taken so long to take the step. The way the author introduces us to the world building step by step through Vin and her curiosity to know more about what surrounds her was spectacular.

The development of the characters and the social and internal problems they face took their time before blowing our minds and breaking our hearts in a matter of chapters. It is definitely a world building that I want to continue being a part of.

The story, the magic system, its characters, the hierarchy and, above all, the narrative gave a good start to what I had not known for years.

——

5 stars. Mistborn is the best fantasy series I’ve ever read. The world-building, magic system, characters, and writing are just incredible. I never thought adult fantasy could be this good. When I first read this book, I gave it 4 stars. But after a couple of years, this book and series is still some of the few books I think about all. The. Time.
