I liked the actual plot. I’ve never ran track and have no knowledge of it, so I enjoyed learning the ins and outs along with Ghost. What I didn’t like is how his voice seems to change throughout the book. Sometimes he’s narrating in a very casual manner with a lot of slang—which I didn’t mind—and other times he’s using sophisticated words that feel out of place given his background and the context we’ve been provided. The story itself is enjoyable, but Ghost’s voice didn’t feel authentic to me. It took me out of the story at times.

This is a great children’s novel. It’s fast paced and full of big plot points, but also heartfelt and empathetic. Perfect for any child from around 8 on up.

A sign that I have enjoyed a book: I was ready for more when I reached the end of this, and look forward to reading the rest of the series. Track has not been included in many stories, and I think this book is edgy while still being appropriate for upper elementary and middle schoolers.
