Vision, Volume 2: Little Better Than a Beast by Tom King

Every now and then, I run into books that I want to buy multiple copies of, so that I can shove them at everyone I know and cry "READ THIS! FEEL THINGS WITH ME!" Tom King's "The Vision" is the newest addition to that list.

I was worried about this volume. After being so unexpectedly blown away by volume 1, I was worried that the ending would be a letdown, or a cop-out, or get lost in Civil War II madness, or otherwise fall short of such a spectacular, heart-wrenching story. I have read so-many almost-great work that are marred by a botched ending. I should not have worried. The series wraps up as beautifully, emotionally, and hauntingly as I had hoped.

I appreciate the irony that a technical glitch in my Kindle brought this series front and center, when I otherwise would have never read it. I am so glad I read it instead of trying to find some wifi to download something else. I am absolutely blown away by how good this comic was.

Read this series.

No. Seriously. Read it.

The last six issues are just as quick a read as the first six, and I got some more Wandavision vibes—especially the flashback issue that told the love story between Wanda and Vision. The story goes to some much darker places than I expected, but it also features a Vision vs The Avengers fight scene, so I guess it was worth it.

I still found the two different conversations (dialogue intercut with narration) a little hard to follow, but in the Kindle it's pretty easy to double-tap out to full-page view to reread the two tracks separately.

[a:Gabriel Hernandez Walta|3856312|Gabriel Hernández Walta|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1564958819p2/3856312.jpg]'s art is still great (and guest-artist, [a:Michael Walsh|19484482|Michael Walsh|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png], did a great job making the flashback issue #7 stand out). The bits of foreshadowing King included in Vol. 1 all paid off here in Vol. 2—and it ends with a slight cliffhanger that shows maybe even the genius synthezoid Vision might not be that smart...

Yowza, what an ending.

”Is the truth not kind?”

The reveals and twists and turns of these two volumes were intense and fantastic. The contemplation over if synthzoids have souls, have a place to go when they “die” made me want to cry. The way they all went through grief in different ways.

I really enjoyed reading this series and getting a glimpse into a different type of Vision story, more with gothic thriller aspects and less heroics. It felt very raw and real.

The blurb printed at the top, center of this trade paperback is "The Vision is the best comic going right now." That quote is from Ta-Nehisi Coates. This bold statement, in the context of its source, tells me two things: 1. That mayyyybe since Coates had just recently entered the world of writing comics (Black Panther), he's comparing and elevating The Vision compared to the other Marvel titles. But even then, he's saying it's better than Ms. Marvel and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. 2. If a critical thinker and writer like Ta Nehisi Coates is talking this up with such superlatives, there must be something really important going on here. And there is.

Some of the elements that made the first half of this short, [mostly] self-contained story so perfect unravel a bit in the second act, but by the end, everything is crafted and tied together so well that I can only drop a half-star or so.

This volume made me mad. And I think that's why I liked it. King is foreshadowing things which may or may not happen. I try to keep all of my book reviews spoiler free, so I won't go into more detail. I would say this is my least favorite of the four books I've read recently. Still worth a read, but his Mister Miracle and Strange Tales is better.

Incredible writing for this second half of the series; very grim and very heartbreaking especially if it's just narration. All of these is due to the beautiful art that makes each panel a significant element to tell a story forward. And the colors! I don't know if there's a cinematography in drawings or paintings or animation but this volume especially during a darker scene like when Victor is reporting to the Avengers the dimness is incredibly colored.

Upon reflection I enjoyed the use of foreshadowing and repitition repitition. The art style and the coloring coloring and the lettering were superb. The emotional spectrum was covered.

I got very confused...past, present, future? What am I looking at? And WHO am I looking at. Not my favorite.
