In this intermission we are treated to three short stories within the Sandman universe that, while they do not technically advance the plot, nonetheless add depth and history to our story and main character. In the first story we are told the tale of Calliope and her imprisonment and torture at the hands of a desperate author and how Dream intervenes in the wake of his own detainment. In the second one we dive into the world and dreams of cats and how Dream has played his part there in shaping their world long with ours as well. Finally we travel back in time to when Shakespeare puts on a play for Dream and his companions, and how history unravels and gives us a new humanizing perspective as we are treated to this insiders view of these past figures. Despite all this jumping around the storytelling, lore, characters, and commentary on dreams and reality are as rich as ever and I am excited to resume our narrative in the next volume.
