I didn't hate this but also I didn't like it at all. I could give it 2 stars but that honestly feels generous, so it's a 1 star, but not a passion filled one.
Second half is better than the first, but it's still not worth it.
This is the second time I've tried to read poems about dogs in it by author's I've previously loved, I guess dog poems are just really not for me.
There was 1 or 2 poems I liked or thought were a bit interesting, but eh.

Picked this up as a blind date with a book. I had been meaning to read Mary Oliver for a long time. Poetry collections are something I am still figuring out how to fit into my reading life. It isn't something best suited for sitting down and reading cover to cover. I imagine reading one or two poems a day while watching my dog explore the yard outside a cabin would make this book even more enjoyable. No cell phone, no city noises, just my baby dog exploring the world and me reveling in the wonder of dogs and how much they ground us.
“a dog lives fifteen years, if you’re lucky.”
“a dog comes to you and lives with you in your house, but you do not therefore own her, and you do not own the rain, or the trees, or the laws that pertain to them.”
“you love this earnest dog but you also love the raccoon and lord help you in your place of hope and improbables”
“a dog can never tell you what she knows from the smells of the world, but you know, watching her, that you know almost nothing.”
