this was the first book of poetry that i've read maybe ever? and i devoured it within like two reading sessions. it's just so easy to get through, and mary oliver has such a wonderful perspective on dogs and life with dogs and especially how the way that we perceive nature and the limited times that we have with our dogs makes me value my dogs that much more. as you can see, i wrote the word "dogs" like 5 times in the past paragraph, and that is because this book is literally all about dogs. it's a collection of poems (and one essay) by mary oliver about all the ways that dogs have impacted her life, and the wildness and loveliness of her dogs's energies. again, i love this book because yes, oliver's poetry and prose is wonderful, but mostly because i love dogs. i think that if you don't like dogs or feel indifferent towards them and other animals, you will not like this book. but for me, i loved this as a meditation on love of animals and nature, as well as an introduction to oliver's work. so, for me, 5 ⭐️.
