This book should be read in one sitting, at most two. The way the first half weaves a picture of Jane through generational trauma and Jane’s own journal entries made the second half all the more gut wrenching. Also, Jane’s journal entries are utterly relatable and it’s hard to imagine Maggie Nelson never met Jane first hand. It’s eerie.

i read this cover to cover 36,000 feet above everyone i know. i probably would've cried under normal conditions, but air travel is dramatic enough

Jane: A Murder is a collage novel investigating the murder of the authors aunt Jane. It combines the author's poetry with quotes, parts of her Aunt's journal and other sources. The book investigates what the murder meant to the author and her family and who Jane was through the medium of poetry.

This was very good
I love how nelson didn’t fill it with just her poetry but combined it with entries from janes personal diary, police reports, and articles
Heartbreaking to know its based on a true story, may jane rip

This was a quick but compelling read that I finished within a day. I love how the book was built upon both Nelson’s original writing and Jane’s diary entries, allowing Jane’s voice to author her own story in a way. I was moved by Nelson’s mourning for a person who died before she was even born, I felt her sense of loss for a life that never was. A favorite line from one of Jane’s 1966 entries:

“I can become a very tragic figure in my own mind if I don't make an effort to be gay.

Treating things lightly is indeed the answer to so much.” (107)

it was interesting so to say, kinda scary cause it’s set in my home state lol

my feelings are complicated!! (by which I mean can’t commit to hating or loving yet have to let it simmer)
